An early start on a new permission that has RB history spanning 43 AD to 410 AD. 
The field we chose to survey had been excavated in the past which identified a roundhouse and enclosure but little other evidence.
We also came to the same conclusion as we didn't recover any ceramic or metallic evidence of RB activity.
The surrounding fields however hold more evidence but unfortunately they are still under crop.

We called in at the farmhouse and had a chat with the landowner as we had never met him up until this point.
He said that we could survey the fields as soon as they were harvested.

We had a drive to a site (TL) of which we hadn't visited since April 2014. This site has a wealth of medieval pottery and artefacts with a few medieval coins covering C14th to C16th. We believe the Romans were there too!

Sure enough, several sherds of C14th pottery were recovered along with four wild boars tusks. 
The metallic artefacts were quite suprising with a late Anglo Saxon cheek bridal fitting, a lead pilgrims ampulla and penannular brooch pin.
As the ground was quite rough we decided to have a look at another site nearby.

The field had been cultivated and was relatively flat although not perfect.
I sent the landowner a text but didn't get a reply so we drove down to the farmhouse but nobody was at home. With that we decided to head home.
Halfway home I then got a text saying it was ok to survey.. dohh!
Never mind..... I'm sure we'll have several opportunities over the next few months.

Well, a typical Bank Holiday Monday with rain all the way to our latest and newest permission.
As planned, we arrived at the landowners house to find a map safely located under the porchway door mat as promised, attached was a message to ring at some point that morning.
We were taken aback with the amount of areas that we could survey.
Our first area was a field that was annotated on the map with the the fact that Roman pottery was found there in 1938.
Sure enough, we came across sherds of Roman pottery and one of those pieces was a huge section of Roman roof tile (tegula).
Three Roman coins in poor condition were recovered along with a spoon bowl.
We rang the landowner as promised only to find that the field we were in wasn't his! The track marked by the landowner as his ran between two land holdings. He said not to worry as his neighbours wouldn't mind. 
That said, we had a recce on most areas of the land so as to orienate ourselves with the future survey points. The main field was still under crop so a field that was actually next to a neighbouring village came under the microscope.  a sherd of C17th slipware was recovered.
With the inclement weather it was difficult going especially on the newly cultivated land. The soil had a high clay content so became quite claggy.

We were invited to return to the farmhouse and harvest the Victoria Plums in the orchard situated in their front garden.
Loaded with several kilo's of plums (and huge tegula) we made our way home with differing thoughts on our next visit.
